Alex Fine brings a little rodeo experience to his latest Flaunt cover story. Photographed by Martin Gatti and styled by Freddy Alonso, the MobLand actor moves between a white cowboy hat and bare-chested portraits. Between the more composed shots, Gatti catches Fine smiling as hands reach into the frame to adjust his hair. The photographs give his tough-guy credentials a welcome sense of humor.

Speaking with Jake Carlisi for Flaunt, Fine traces an unusual route into acting. Before his first audition landed him a role in 1883, he had worked as a trainer and taken up professional bull riding. Yet the rodeo was less a calling than a personal test. “Bull riding was just kind of a challenge to myself,” he explains. “I didn’t enjoy it.”

Alonso gives that history a fashion counterpart, styling a Gucci shirt and trousers with a hat and bolo tie from Penny Fitting Studio. A voluminous Dolce & Gabbana coat takes the shoot further from the ranch, while Gatti’s close-ups make room for Fine’s easy smile.

For all the physical demands of his former pursuits, acting has introduced a different uncertainty. Sport offered a clearer relationship between daily practice and improvement. “But with acting, I didn’t know how I could work every day and do something everyday that makes me better,” Fine tells Carlisi. His first scene in 1883 put him alongside experienced stars, but he remembers feeling calm. The bigger adjustment has been learning a profession where effort offers fewer guarantees.
