Guillaume Meilland
Guillaume Meilland is a French menswear designer whose work at Salvatore Ferragamo approached Italian luxury through the making of everyday clothes. Appointed to lead men’s ready-to-wear in 2016, he presented his first collection for fall-winter 2017. His starting point was a wardrobe that could move between casual dress and tailoring, with lighter construction giving the wearer more freedom.
Before Florence, Meilland developed his career in Paris, working at Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent before spending eight years at Lanvin. That studio background gave him experience of houses with sharply different identities. His move to Ferragamo also meant moving to Italy, placing him closer to the factories and the people responsible for turning design into finished garments.
Speaking to The Week in July 2017, Meilland described looking at Italian culture from a French perspective. He saw Ferragamo’s beginnings in American shoemaking as an advantage. The house had an international history, and its foundations in leather goods left him room to build an approach to clothing beyond the conventions of an established tailoring business.
His account of the process was specific. Working with factories meant questioning the fabric and construction of a jacket or shirt; replacing shirts with knitwear could soften the overall silhouette. The resulting clothes treated elegance as something a man could inhabit comfortably. Meilland’s Ferragamo chapter belongs to the period when the house distributed creative responsibility across specialist designers, before later changes brought its collections under different leadership.
