True Religion was founded in California in 2002 by Jeff Lubell and Kym Gold. The label emerged during the premium denim boom, when jeans became a major arena for designer pricing and conspicuous branding. Its thick stitching and horseshoe pocket motif made the product recognizable even when the rest of an outfit was simple.

The brand’s Super T stitching became a signature, giving seams an exaggerated weight and making construction part of the decoration. Bootcut silhouettes helped establish its early identity, while denim jackets and other casual clothing extended the same visual language beyond jeans. The appeal rested on treating denim as something expressive, with visible details that distinguished it from ordinary workwear.

True Religion also developed a close association with hip-hop, where its jeans appeared in artists’ wardrobes and lyrics. That relationship gave the name a cultural life beyond the fashion cycle that had first made premium denim prominent. Celebrity campaigns and collaborations built on a familiarity already established through music and street style.

Designer Zihaad Wells, whose career includes Levi’s, returned as creative director in 2019. The label’s continuing identity draws on its original denim signatures while adapting fits and styling for different generations of customers. Its history connects California’s premium jeans business with a wider culture of recognizable, deliberately assertive casual clothing.
