Christopher Kane

Christopher Kane was founded in London in 2006 by Scottish designer Christopher Kane and his sister Tammy Kane. Launched after his graduation from Central Saint Martins, the label developed a reputation for finding fashion possibilities in unlikely materials and everyday references. Its early womenswear established an approach in which color and image could make an ordinary garment seem unfamiliar.

Menswear followed in 2010. Photographs of space and explosions appeared on T-shirts and knitwear, introducing the designer’s interest in scientific imagery to a casual wardrobe. Subsequent collections explored subjects ranging from anatomy to television crime dramas, using printed graphics and fabric treatments to connect those ideas with wearable shapes.

The men’s line placed this experimentation beside recognizable British clothing. Gingham shirts, checked tailoring, and sportswear recalled the clothes Kane knew growing up near Glasgow. His work on Versace’s Versus line provided another setting for his design practice while the namesake label developed independently.

PPR, later renamed Kering, acquired a majority stake in 2013. The company subsequently returned to the founders’ control before the business closed in 2023. Its menswear archive preserves a particular contribution to London fashion, showing how printed images and domestic references could unsettle the conventions of a familiar shirt, sweater, or suit.
