Carven was founded in Paris in 1945 by Marie-Louise Carmen de Tommaso, known as Madame Carven. Her couture house opened at the Rond-Point des Champs-Élysées, establishing a reputation for clothes attentive to proportion and ease of movement. That interest in the relationship between a garment and its wearer became a lasting part of the house’s identity.
A later chapter brought Carven into contemporary ready-to-wear under Guillaume Henry, appointed in 2009. His menswear gave the Parisian wardrobe a youthful interpretation, combining tailoring with casual pieces and a playful sense of scale. The clothes made room for character within recognizable forms, from the short jacket to the tailored trouser.
Barnabé Hardy took over menswear in 2015, continuing that dialogue between sportswear and tailoring. Carven suspended the men’s line in 2016, closing a brief but influential period in its modern history. Those collections remain a distinct chapter in the brand’s archive.
The house continued through its womenswear, with Louise Trotter later contributing another interpretation before Mark Thomas assumed creative leadership in 2025. Carven’s identity connects its couture origins to successive ideas about everyday dress. Its menswear history belongs within that wider story, even as the current fashion collections center on women.
