Woolrich
Woolrich
Woolrich traces its origins to the woolen mill John Rich established in Pennsylvania in 1830. The business grew around clothing and textiles intended for work and outdoor life. Its connection to place became unusually direct when the surrounding community took the Woolrich name in 1888.
Buffalo check became one of the label’s recognizable patterns, appearing on a shirt introduced in 1850. Its graphic simplicity gave a practical garment a lasting visual identity. Woolrich’s menswear developed around that meeting of material and purpose, with outerwear providing protection while shirts and knitwear formed the layers underneath.
The Arctic Parka, introduced in 1972, brought another enduring shape into the archive. Its association with workers on the Alaska pipeline helped establish the coat’s reputation for cold-weather use. As the brand expanded in Europe, that functional history became part of a wider urban wardrobe, connecting American outdoor clothing to different habits of daily dress.
Woolrich’s later development includes Black Label, introduced under Todd Snyder’s creative direction for fall-winter 2024. Ownership also became divided by territory. BasicNet acquired Woolrich’s European operations and European brand rights in 2025, with the European business moving to Turin in 2026. Through those organizational changes, the brand’s most recognizable references remain its checked wool clothing and protective outerwear.
