Established: 2004

Cheap Monday emerged in Stockholm in 2004 with a proposition that challenged the price of fashionable denim. Designer Örjan Andersson developed the jeans through the retail business behind Weekday, working with partners including Adam and Linda Friberg and Lars Karlsson. Slim proportions and an accessible price gave the label a place in the wardrobes of a generation interested in music and secondhand clothes.

Skinny jeans became its defining product. Dark denim and narrow legs offered a direct way to participate in the look of the period, while the skull logo made a pair recognizable beyond its fit. The clothes belonged to a broader youth culture in which a concert, a club and everyday dressing could share the same wardrobe.

The range developed beyond jeans, but denim remained the starting point. Graphic tops and casual outerwear extended the identity, allowing the wearer to build on a single recognizable shape. The brand’s appeal depended on the relationship between a forceful silhouette and the possibility of buying it at an approachable price.

H&M Group became an owner in 2008. After the original business closed, Cheap Monday returned in 2024 through Weekday and selected retailers. The revival expanded the denim vocabulary to include looser fits alongside skinny and bootcut styles, connecting its earlier identity to a different generation’s ideas about proportion.
