Ben Allen
Ben Allen is a British model from Brockley in southeast London whose career began with a chance encounter on Portobello Road. As he told Wonderland in 2012, a friend’s antics drew the attention of a passerby and the woman accompanying him, who asked Allen if he had ever modeled. Two days later, he was at a casting for David Sims. He was 16 and still studying for his A levels when fashion became a profession.
Opening Prada’s spring-summer 2013 menswear show gave Allen an unusually prominent start. His angular face, strong brows, and blue-green eyes offered a youthful alternative to the conventional leading man. Early runway work also took him to Dries Van Noten and Acne, establishing a presence that could look reserved in a portrait and more assured in motion.
David Sims photographed him for Jil Sander’s fall-winter 2013 campaign, placing his face at the center of the house’s advertising. Campaigns for COS and Neil Barrett followed for spring-summer 2014, broadening his place in European menswear. Work for Calvin Klein and Paul Smith extended that range, from an American fashion mainstay to a designer closely associated with British individuality.
Magazine work has given Allen room to develop beyond his runway beginnings. His credits include Fantastic Man and GQ, alongside repeated appearances in Esquire España. Later photographs for Mango and Massimo Dutti brought that same angular presence to everyday menswear. Across those different settings, his appeal rests on the balance between a serious gaze and a face that can still suggest youthful mischief.
His early interviews reveal a more playful personality than the photographs sometimes suggest. Allen spoke about photography and football, and about musical tastes that ranged from contemporary rap to Louis Armstrong. He also expressed an interest in Japan’s contrast between rural life and modern cities. That curiosity offers another way to see a model often cast for his intensity, with an alertness to the world on both sides of the camera.
