Club Monaco began with the belief that basics could be more interesting. Founded in Toronto in 1985 by Joe Mimran, Saul Mimran, and Alfred Sung, the label opened its first shop on Queen Street West. Its early black-and-white identity gave everyday clothing a clear visual language, offering an alternative to the emphatic dressing associated with the decade.
The name came from a fabric swatch called Monaco. That modest starting point suited a brand built around the individual garment, from a cotton shirt to a useful pair of trousers. As the business expanded, its stores gave that wardrobe an urban setting, using interiors and visual presentation to make the act of buying essentials feel more personal.
Menswear gradually widened the definition of those essentials. During Aaron Levine’s time leading men’s design from 2011 to 2015, soft tailoring and references to traditional menswear brought more texture to the offer. Knitwear and relaxed separates helped establish a wardrobe that could accommodate work and a less formal social life, with individual pieces doing service in both.
Acquired by Ralph Lauren in 1999 and sold to Regent in 2021, Club Monaco developed from a Canadian retail concept into an international label associated with New York. Its lasting contribution to menswear is a way of making restraint feel inviting. The clothes give a man room to build a wardrobe through repeated use, paying attention to fabric and proportion instead of relying on a conspicuous signature.
