Bally
Alessio Boni / Bally
A well-made shoe is the foundation of Bally. The Swiss house dates to 1851, when Carl Franz Bally and his brother Fritz established a shoemaking business in Schönenwerd. Its identity grew from leather, construction, and the practical needs of the wearer, developing into an international luxury label with footwear at its center.
The family’s background was in ribbon manufacturing. Under Carl Franz Bally, the business adopted industrial methods and expanded beyond Switzerland, opening shops in cities including Montevideo and Paris during the nineteenth century. That combination of manufacturing expertise and international ambition helped turn a local enterprise into a recognizable footwear name. The company’s Swiss base is in Caslano, in the canton of Ticino.
For men, Bally’s strongest associations remain shoes and leather goods. A polished lace-up, a loafer, or a leather bag gives an outfit its finish, while the wider ready-to-wear collections build a setting around those pieces. The label has explored different balances of formality and ease over time, using clothing to extend a house vocabulary first established through accessories.
Creative leadership has included Brian Atwood, Michael Herz and Graeme Fidler, Pablo Coppola, and Rhuigi Villaseñor. Simone Bellotti brought a particularly focused view to the house from 2023 until his departure for Jil Sander in 2025. Design subsequently returned to the internal team. Other projects have opened the brand to outside perspectives, including a 2024 travel collection designed with actor Adrien Brody. Through these changes, Bally’s footwear and leather craftsmanship provide the most direct connection between its history and the contemporary wardrobe.
