Montblanc was founded in 1906 in Berlin, Germany, by stationer Claus-Johannes Voss, banker Alfred Nehemias, and engineer August Eberstein, with operations relocating to Hamburg in 1907. The original proposition was simple, a leak-proof fountain pen aimed at professionals who needed a reliable writing instrument for daily correspondence.

By 1924, the Meisterstück had arrived. The white star emblem set against black resin came to be widely described as the writing instrument of statesmen, a label reinforced by its presence on the desks of chancellors, presidents, and chief executives across the 20th century.

Men’s accessories came as a later expansion. The category arrived through leather goods first, then ready-to-wear accessories that sit alongside the pens, watches, and writing culture objects.

The design language is trade-oriented. Soft-construction briefcases come in full-grain calfskin, alongside slim bifold wallets, belts with understated pin buckles, and silk ties in repeating small-scale patterns suited to a dark suit.

In the broader landscape, the house sits closer to Dunhill and Bottega Veneta in its accessories logic than to a tailoring house like Brioni, trading on craft signatures over runway visibility. A meaningful credential came in 1997 when Montblanc was awarded membership in the Comité Colbert, the French association of heritage houses, an unusual recognition for a German maker.

Ownership shifted in 1977 when Dunhill acquired the company. Montblanc has been part of the Richemont group since 1993, with the brand entering watchmaking in 1997 through the establishment of Montblanc Montre SA in Le Locle, Switzerland. The high-end watchmaking division was later bolstered when Richemont acquired the historic Swiss manufacture Minerva in Villeret in 2006 and assigned it to Montblanc.

Giorgio Sarné has led the maison as global CEO since late 2024, following Nicolas Baretzki’s departure, with a focus on integrating writing instruments, watches, and leather under a single retail footprint of roughly 600 boutiques worldwide.

Today, the menswear-adjacent business dresses lawyers, bankers, and executives in the accessories that complete a tailored wardrobe. It sits in the accessible end of the European heritage market alongside Dunhill and Smythson, valued more for its leather and writing objects than for any claim on the runway.
