Are Wooden Wall Panels Making a Design Comeback?

Like fashion, with home decor, trends often cycle, and why many may be hesitant to consider wooden panels for their home, it may just be the right detail to give your humble abode some depth and an extra wow factor.

So what’s the story with wood panels anyways? Wooden panels are made of planks or sheets of solid wood, engineered board, or other wood-like products. They can be designed into attractive box moldings and batten styles to give a 3D effect.

What is Wooden Paneling Called?

Wainscoting. During the 18th century, a new paneling style came into fruition: Wainscot paneling. Danish Wainscot oak paneling was characterized by only covering the lower section of a wall, leaving a dado above rather than the floor to ceiling, or indeed the ceiling.

Why Wooden Paneling Wall?

Wooden panels can be added to a room’s interior space differently. Wooden panels or wooden walls can add mystical simplicity to the space where used. Wood paneling adds allure to those bright white walls in your room. The wooden panels can be arranged to add design elements and drama to a given room.

Areas for Wood Paneling

Wood paneling is often done outside the main door, especially where bigger space is available, like bungalows or enough entrance space to decorate it. For interiors, wood paneling can be done for walls behind TV units, pillars or columns, beams, the back wall of the bed, etc. It is sometimes used to separate two different areas of the same room.

Purpose of Paneling

Paneling is done on the wall behind the TV to give depth to the unit. Paneling done behind the bed wall too is done to add depth to that wall; this makes the room look bigger too. For AC’s too- there is copper pipe-that compulsorily is fitted 1 foot below the ceiling. This forms a beam in the wall. A drill cannot be made for AC copper pipe, and therefore paneling is done.

The entrance door is usually 3 feet, but if one wants to show it as 5 feet, then paneling can be done. This is done to create a wooden elevation at the entrance.

Wood Paneling can be done in several ways, like having planks of wood used horizontally or vertically to the wall. This often makes the space look more casual but adds warmth to simple space. The use of wood or planks in a diversified way can add interest to plain old drywall.

What is a Wood Panel Made of?

Panels are typically made of veneer, strands, particles, or fibers and bonded with a synthetic or other adhesive cured using heat and pressure. The properties of the panel product result from the character of the wood raw material, the adhesive, additives, and the details of the manufacturing process.

How is Wall Paneling Done?

Wall paneling can be installed in two ways:

  • By screwing panels onto the wall. This is applicable for straight, smooth wall surfaces and lightweight panels.
  • Install a metal grid frame on the wall and then skew the panels onto the grid.

Can You Paint Wall Paneling?

Painting wood paneling is a simple way to change the look of a room. A fresh coat of paint quickly updates old wood paneling or wainscoting for less than the cost of replacing the walls.
