Have you recently been invited to an Indian wedding?

Indian weddings are festive, three-day events and if you have the chance to attend one, you should definitely go. But what should you wear to an Indian wedding?

Indian weddings are different from Western weddings in many ways. And perhaps one of the most obvious differences is the dress code.

While wearing a formal, modest outfit is always acceptable if you don’t have time to go shopping, dressing in traditional Indian garb can be a lot of fun.

Check out this guide to discover the top outfits to wear to an Indian wedding.

1. Lehenga

A Lehenga Choli will always be considered ‘the’ wedding guest dress.

Also known as a langa, this is a full ankle-length skirt that is pleated and embroidered. The skirt is secured at the waist, leaving the lower back and the midriff bare.

While there are various types of embroidery patterns done on the Lehenga Choli, the Gotta Patti technique is definitely the most popular for weddings and festivals. This technique originated in Rajasthan, India and it involves applying small pieces of ribbon to the fabric.

The skirt typically has an A-line hem, which means it comes in at the waist and flares out at the bottom.

2. Saree

When most of us think of traditional Indian garb, we think of the saree. The saree is suitable for all kinds of guests, from the friend to the bride’s sister to a distant aunt.

A saree is a woman’s garment that is made from a drape that is 4 to 8 meters in length. The fabric is typically wrapped around the waist, with one end of it being draped over the shoulder.

The word saree literally translates to ‘strip of cloth’, and because this is such a popular clothing item, it’s easy to find one in all colors, patterns, and sizes.

3. Suit

When we say ‘suit’, we’re not talking about the traditional suits you see men wearing to Western weddings.

There are various suits to choose from for an Indian wedding – the Patiala suit, the Anarkali suit, the Churidar suit, or the long kurta, just to name a few. The great thing about these suits is that they’re all incredibly comfortable and will make it easy for you to dance the night away.

4. Gharara or Sharara

If you care more about style than comfort, then we recommend opting for a gharara or sharara.

This is a long, royal-style dress that is typically worn by the sister of the groom or sister of the bride. If you’re a distant relative of one of the newlyweds, you may also consider sporting a sharara. However, just make sure it’s in a subtle hue, so as not to upstage one of the family members.

5. Palazzo Pants

Palazzo pants have been gaining steam in the Western fashion world over the last few years. However, these pants have been a fashion staple for a long time in Indian culture.

Indian-style palazzo pants are typically made from a thick fabric, and the pants stretch from just above the waistline to the floor. You’ll find these pants in all kinds of bright colors, and you can pair them with a chic blouse, shirt, or kurta.

6. Anarkali Skirt

Last but not least, you can wear an Anarkali skirt.

If you don’t like wearing a lehenga, this is a perfect alternative. They are extremely comfortable while still being fashionable. To make the outfit more wedding-appropriate, you can add some sparkling accessories.

As you can see, there are a lot of outfit options for Indian weddings!
