This is our take on a traditional Fisherman’s Sweater, offered in a both classic Off-White and Kelly Green colorways. Ours comes in a soft 100% lambswool that clocks in at a 3 gauge–meaning it can hold its own against the elements whether it is dressing up a pair of sweats or dressing down a pair of flannels. The fisherman’s sweater that this is based on was standard workwear for the mariners of Ireland’s Aran Islands. The wool could absorb a significant amount of moisture while retaining its warming properties and the various types of stitches each carried hidden meanings. The cable stitch was meant to be a depiction of the fisherman’s ropes, and represents a wish for a fruitful day at sea. The diamond stitch reflects the small fields of these islands. These diamonds are sometimes filled with Irish moss stitch, depicting the seaweed that was used to fertilise the barren fields and produce a good harvest. Hence the diamond stitch is a wish for success and wealth.
