Numéro Homme Berlin explores black culture for its spring-summer 2017 issue. Getting political, the magazine links up with singer John Legend for one of its cover stories. The outspoken star appears before the lens of photographer Sandy Kim.

Stylists Krissie Torgerson and Natasha Newman-Thomas come together for the feature. The pair pulls together a tailored wardrobe of statement pieces. Legend’s lineup of ensembles includes the latest from brands such as Burberry and Haider Ackermann.

Legend talks to Numéro Homme Berlin about how his music and politics work hand in hand. The singer discusses his 2016 album Darkness and Light, particularly the song, Marching Into the Dark. In a translated quote, Legend explains that the song is about Dick Gregory.

Legend says, “Gregory was one of the first black comedians to speak openly about racial discrimination on the stage.” He adds, “He earned a great living as a comedian and financially supported the Civil Rights Movement around Dr. King and Medgar Evers.” Legends also goes on to highlight, “Gregory walked along, risking not only his career but also his life.”
