Unbroken actor Miyavi graces the pages of Interview magazine’s December 2014/January 2015 issue with a photo shoot lensed by Robbie Fimmano. Miyavi discusses being enlisted by the movie’s director, Angelina Jolie. Opening up to the magazine about the difficult decision to play the film’s sadistic camp guard Matsuhiro “The Bird” Watanabe, Miyavi explained, “When I first met Angie in Tokyo, I wasn’t sure that I was going to do this, because talking about the war is still a sensitive issue in Japan. But even before I asked her, Angie said that she wanted to make a meaningful creation, which could be a bridge between America and Japan, not just a typical war movie. It’s all about the guy, Louis Zamperini, with an unbroken heart. And, as a musician, I see the story as the tracks on an album. You can’t fully express yourself with one track. The many topics or themes–happiness, sadness, loneliness–take several songs, several tracks. Film is the same, so as a villain, I thought that the more evil I become, the more dramatic the story gets. And the better it can deliver its message: forgiveness. In the end, Louis Zamperini came back to Japan for the Nagano Olympics. That’s something that only strong men can do. If you’re not strong enough, you can’t forgive. I thought it was really worth it to try to do this, to deliver that message. Even as a villain.” Read more at InterviewMagazine.com. / Styling by Sarah Ellison-Prat.
