Karl Lagerfeld Travels with Model Muse Brad Kroenig, Why He Loves Models: “I Hate Ugly People”

The New York Times recently published a story on the jet set life of Karl Lagerfeld and his longtime model muse Brad Kroenig. The feature chronicles Lagerfeld and Kroenig’s ongoing relationship. After a 2003 VMAN shoot with Lagerfeld, Kroenig became the Chanel designer’s male muse, appearing in a great number of photos, so much that he had a four-volume book dedicated to him, Metamorphoses of an American. Kroenig says about the designer’s fascination with him, “The models that are uncomfortable just don’t make it. Why not get naked in the shower and have million-dollar jewelry on me?”

Discussing while he often travels with models and why they are part of his inner circle, Lagerfeld confesses, “I hate ugly people. Very depressing.” A family man, Kroenig’s son Hudson is another Lagerfeld muse in the making. On a recent trip aboard a private jet, Hudson took note of Lagerfeld’s bed and asked where he was going to sleep to which the designer replied “You sleep on your seat, darling. I have to arrive fresh, you don’t have to. Don’t be selfish.” Later, when fitting Hudson for the runway, Lagerfeld commented on his long tunic and “Aladdin-like shoes”, commenting, “Ah, our little prince!
