Photographed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino, designer Karl Lagerfeld is one of The New York Times Style Magazine’s latest cover stars. Sitting down to talk with Andrew O’Hagen, Lagerfeld is an open book. Musing on various life topics, Lagerfeld is as engaging as usual. Touching on the subject of death, he explains, “One day it will be over and I don’t care. As my mother used to say, ‘There is one God for everybody and all the religions are shops.'”

Moving on to the subject of his work, Lagerfeld reveals, “I always have the feeling I could do better. I always feel I am behind a glass wall that I cannot break to get through to what I want.” Known for being committed to his profession, Lagerfeld is asked if he is happy to which he replies, “You are never happy in the moment when you ask yourself that question. So I don’t ask myself the question, which means I must be happy. I’ve been lucky. I didn’t finish school. I learned nothing. It is all improvisation. And yet I am not doing badly. Happiness is not something life owes you.” Read more on NYTimes.com.

  1. Either Karl Lagerfeld has undergone cosmetic surgery ( well done anyway) or it`s all photoshop ( also well done) . A fascinating transformation.
