The Netflix streaming service and its peers have gained a reputation for featuring hugely popular series with a high level of attention to detail. Is this reflected in the clothing the male characters wear or have they let some apparent errors and anachronisms slip through the net?
Stranger Things Clothing Was Researched
The fourth season of Stranger Things is set in 1980s California, and they needed to get everything right to make the setting completely believable. Costume designer Amy Parris was tasked with researching the garments for this season, which saw the timeline jump forward a few years and the location moving west from Indiana.
She quickly realized that the Quiksilver clothing brand was crucial to getting this right, so she worked with them to get the perfect garments for the characters. Parris was even given access to the Quiksilver archive, allowing her to choose pieces from the suitable period, and the company re-made them for filming.Â
Overall, this surf brand’s use worked well, leading to the launch of the Quiksilver x Stranger Things collaboration called the 1986 collection that fans can enjoy.
As one of the most popular shows created by Netflix, you won’t worry about deleting your Netflix history after watching it, even if you spot an error. After all, the fourth series premiered with a record 286 million hours in its first weekend, so it’s listed on many users’ histories.
However, some users like to delete this record to avoid the algorithms knowing everything about them or to keep their viewing safe from prying eyes.
Outlander Explores Accurate Historic Outfits
For fans of the time-traveling romantic series Outlander, the incredible outfits worn by Jamie Fraser are among the highlights. As he travels from Scotland to France and the Americas, he wears a series of historically accurate clothing that helps to add to the atmosphere.
Some clothing and other continuity errors have been made during the series. Still, nothing serious appears to have been done to diminish the historical accuracy of Jamie’s clothing, which is quite a feat considering how the series jumps back and forward.
The most notable continuity error to affect Jamie was when his beard confused viewers in episode 13 of the third season. He’s on a boat with Claire and claims that the very light stubble on his chin is four days’ growth, yet just a few hours later, he has a noticeably thicker beard.Â
Mad Men & the Impeccable Pesko Fold
This series takes us back to the 1960s, giving the creators the challenge of finding the right outfits to transport viewers back in time without any jarring errors that might spoil the mood. Thankfully, Mad Men has been widely praised for its stylish outfits.
In particular, Don Draper is renowned for the impeccable pesko fold in his pocket square, among other things. Costume designer Janie Bryant went to great lengths to accurately reflect the styles of the times, such as the narrower lapels and ties than we’re used to now.
Although some critics suggest that using period fabric rather than modern lightweight equivalents would have made the outfits even more accurate, most viewers are unlikely to notice the difference.
The time and attention to detail put into these shows can be seen in the hugely accurate clothing worn by the leading men. While there are some minor errors, there need to be more blatant to ruin our enjoyment of the shows.
