Salvatore Ferragamo Looks to Hitchcock for Inspired Spring ’21 Collection

The Fashionisto / Published October 3, 2020

Drawing inspiration from the classic movies of the one and only Sir Alfred Hitchcock, in particular, Marnie, Vertigo, and The Birds, the much-anticipated Salvatore Ferragamo spring-summer 2021 collection consisted of fashions with a mysterious refinement. Chromatically, the ready-to-wear lineup reflects the almost surreal color saturation level in the Master of Suspense’s technicolor movies.

Narrowed down to only ten looks by Paul Andrew, the Italian fashion brand’s men’s creative director, the Salvatore Ferragamo menswear collection channels Cary Grant and his on-screen ensembles with an artisan finesse, a more relaxed fit, and staccato accents to add a modern twist. The outfits and accessories have been designed for comfort, easy movement, lightness, and durability to complement technicolor’s chromatic quality.

The intense color palette, such as the technicolor red and yellow of men’s v-neck t-shirts, creates a vibrant visual contrast with the warm, soft colors of the trousers, jackets (gull grey), and trench coats for a refined casual look. The menswear collection also includes twill overalls and an all-white outfit accessorized with brown leather boots and an off-white men’s bag.

Other accessories that complete the season’s ensembles include retro sunglasses, leather belts, newly sized Studio shoulder bags, and shoes such as square-toed men’ sandals and all-new monochrome Gancini driving shoes that feature Salvatore Ferragamo’s signature horse-bit detail. Hitchcock-inspired colors such as Vertigo Mauve, Hitchcock Tan Bodega Bay Sky, and Tippi Hedren Green are also found in the menswear collection. The designer has also used technological innovations such as sustainable-grade mohair/wool beautifully crafted into outerwear and artisan techniques such as floral motifs printed on Hitchcock Tan trench coats.

With this collection, Paul Andrew tries to celebrate the beauty that comes out of a dark and uncertain period (think lockdown), just like the strangely beautiful ending of a suspenseful Hitchcock movie.
