Promoting his new movie, Manchester by the Sea, Casey Affleck covers Variety magazine. Yu Tsai photographs the actor and filmmaker for the magazine’s October 18th issue. Affleck speaks candidly with Variety, discussing his career after his Oscar nomination for 2007’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Affleck recalls, “I was told things were going to change and I would get more opportunities. And the opportunities never arrived.”

Analyzing his career, Affleck reflects, “I feel like whenever I do a movie, people think, ‘Well, that’s good, but that’s probably the best he’ll do.’ I sort of bang and bang and kick in a door, and people say, ‘Now a million doors will open for you.’ And they don’t. I’m 41, and it’s been many years of banging and kicking.”

On the heels of great reviews for Manchester by the Sea, things are looking up for Affleck. The American actor shares his reaction to a recent standing ovation at a screening, “I never experienced anything like that. I’m more familiar with other kinds of reactions–lukewarm to politely disgusted.
