The House of Gucci was founded by Guccio Gucci in 1921. After his death in 1983, the luxury leather-goods label met some troubling times. It wasn’t until the 90′s when Tom Ford came onboard and shook up the Italian house that it recovered. Ford steered Gucci into brand new territory and introduced a sexier and more contemporary look. His critically acclaimed breakout fall collection in 1995, featuring disco-colored satin shirts under body hugging suits, solidified his career and revitalized the company. Gucci was acquired by PPR in 1999 after a battle with luxury giant, LVMH. Ford made his departure in 2004 after disputes with the executives of PPR. He was succeeded by Alessandra Fachinetti, who later quit after only two seasons. Accessories designer of Gucci, Frida Giannini, took reign of the label in 2006 and directs both menswear and womenswear.
